Two Scenarios for US Cobalt Demand to 2022

Cleveland, OH, April 24, 2018 — US demand for cobalt is forecast to see minimal annual growth to 2022, according to the baseline scenario projected in Cobalt: United States, a report recently released by Freedonia Focus Reports. The optimistic scenario envisions much stronger annual growth in US cobalt demand. This latter scenario assumes the following conditions:

  • Tesla and other battery manufacturers would have to meet production targets and make battery cells in the US from battery cathode material also made in the country.
  • US battery material producers must have good access to global cobalt supplies.
  • Global cobalt suppliers must be able to expand to meet demand.

These and other key insights are featured in Cobalt: United States. This report forecasts to 2022 US cobalt demand in metric tons of cobalt content. Total demand is segmented by form in terms of:

  • metal
  • chemical compounds
  • purchased scrap

Total demand is also segmented by application as follows:

  • superalloys
  • chemicals and ceramics
  • cemented carbides
  • other applications such as alloys, steels, and electronic components

To illustrate historical trends, total demand, the various segments, and trade are provided in annual series from 2007 to 2017.
