US Chromium Demand to Increase 2.0% Yearly in Volume Terms to 2022

Cleveland, OH, November 28, 2018 — US demand for chromium ferroalloys and metal is forecast to advance 2.0% per year in volume terms through 2022, according to Chromium: United States, a report recently released by Freedonia Focus Reports. Advances will be driven by growth in stainless steel production, supported by expected production gains in machinery and building products. In addition, an ongoing shift toward stainless steel types with higher levels of chromium content will aid gains. However, a slowdown in motor vehicle production growth will restrain faster advances.

Demand for high-carbon ferrochromium, the dominant material segment, is projected to advance 2.1% per annum through 2022. Rising stainless steel production levels will drive gains, boosted by expanded activity in the construction and durable goods sectors. High-carbon ferrochromium will continue to represent the dominant material specified in stainless steel production. The domestic steel industry is expected to benefit somewhat from the Trump administration’s tariffs on foreign steel. However, relatively weak growth prospects for US motor vehicle production will weigh on gains in domestic stainless steel production and demand for ferrochromium.
