Two of the Hottest Trends to Watch in Household Cooking Appliances

US demand for household cooking appliances is forecast to total $9.6 billion in 2021. As more and more homes are being built or remodeled, appliance manufacturers have introduced a wide range of new models designed to entice consumers to replace working appliances early or spring for a higher-end model.

The Internet of Things Boosts Sales

New designs and performance features represent a means of enticing consumers to trade in functional equipment for updated versions, thereby shortening the replacement cycle and boosting demand. Smart appliances, designed to be monitored and controlled from a personal electronic device such as a smartphone or tablet, enable users to schedule and control functions such as cooking times and temperatures to maximize the efficient use of their time. For example, GE Appliances offers WiFi Connect Appliances, which utilize a voice control assistant, Geneva, that integrates with Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Google Assistant. Through Geneva, consumers can issue voice commands to control appliances (e.g., setting an oven to preheat to a specific temperature).

Aesthetic Appeal Draws the Eye

Rising interest in cooking and entertaining is spurring demand for more aesthetically appealing appliances. Historically dominated by simple white colors (leading to the catch-all term “white goods”), the industry has shifted toward more interesting and sometimes more colorful designs to meet consumer preferences. For example, BlueStar (Prizer-Painter Stove Works) offers the ability to customize appliance colors piece-by-piece from a range of over 750 colors and textures as well as the option to submit custom color requests. Consumer preferences have also shifted away from white and regular stainless steel appliances to darker colors and materials with a matte finish that are easier to keep clean and smudge-free, including the Slate series by GE Appliances.
